Stress occurs when we perceive the demands placed on us as greater than our ability to cope. It often involves elements of unpredictability, uncontrollability, and feeling overloaded. Even when we feel stressed, there is usually still some belief that action is possible—we try to problem-solve, push through, organize, plan, or regain control. But when stress intensifies and we begin to feel that our efforts are not working, stress can become overwhelm.
Overwhelm is a state of extreme emotional or cognitive intensity in which it becomes difficult to function or take effective action. Over time, chronic stress and repeated experiences of overwhelm can contribute to burnout—a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion that can leave people feeling depleted, disconnected, and unable to recover through rest alone.
Therapy can help you better understand these patterns, reduce overload, strengthen coping strategies, and create a more sustainable way of living.
Definitions of stress and overwhelm adapted from Brené Brown’s Atlas of the Heart.
